Overview

This half day course provides teaching assistants with step by step guidance on dealing with pupils new to English in the mainstream classroom. It addresses the full range of beginners in English, from those with no prior schooling to those with successful experience of education and strong literacy skills in their mother tongue. The course will give teaching assistants the skills and confidence to successfully integrate these pupils into the classroom.

This course is for

  • primary and secondary support staff and teaching assistants
  • schools with recently arrived EAL pupils, frequent mid-term admissions, high mobility figures and a changing pupil profile

About the Programme Leader

Chiaka Amadi has worked extensively on EAL issues in both primary and secondary schools. As a local authority adviser, she has managed two national research projects on ethnicity, language and equality, and trained and advised governing bodies and leadership teams in preparation for Ofsted inspections.
