This one day course offers a refreshingly practical approach to the issues faced by schools with recent arrivals of students who are new to English. It will be of particular benefit to those schools with frequent mid-term admissions, high mobility figures and a changing pupil profile. Addressing the full range of beginners in English - from those with no prior schooling to those with successful experience of education and strong literacy skills in their mother tongue - this course offers delegates a blueprint for integrating new EAL pupils into the classroom, leading to more confident teachers and more motivated students.

About the Programme Leader

Chiaka Amadi has worked extensively on EAL issues in both primary and secondary schools. As a local authority adviser, she has managed two national research projects on ethnicity, language and equality, and trained and advised governing bodies and leadership teams in preparation for Ofsted inspections.

Catherine Brennan is one of the founders of Better Bilingual. She has worked as an Ethnic Minority Achievement advisor in London, Bristol and surrounding areas for over 20 years, right across the age range from the EYFS to Key Stage 4. She has a specific interest in the induction and education of asylum seeking and refugee pupils.
